What’s New in Windows 11 Version 24H2
The latest Windows 11 version 24H2 brings several enhancements aimed at improving user experience, productivity, and security. Based on the “Germanium” release, this update refines various aspects of the OS. Here are key features in this major update.
AI-Powered Features
With version 24H2, Microsoft is expanding AI capabilities across the platform, integrating Copilot, an AI assistant designed to boost user efficiency. Copilot provides real-time help for tasks like writing, summarizing information, and even offering suggestions for streamlining workflows. Available across different apps, it’s a game-changer for multitasking and productivity.
Additionally, Windows Ink receives substantial updates, enabling more dynamic handwriting experiences. You can now directly write in text fields across the system without converting the input manually. This makes it easier to take notes, annotate documents, or interact with the OS in a more intuitive manner.
A More Streamlined File Explorer
The updated File Explorer enhances file management with clearer context menu labels for actions like cut, copy, paste, and delete. Users can now easily drag files between breadcrumbs in the address bar, simplifying navigation through paths like This PC > Windows (C:) > Program Files. The addition of support for 7-zip and TAR archives offers users more compression options, while an improved extraction feature helps resolve file name conflicts. Furthermore, PNG files now support metadata editing, allowing users to add relevant information directly to their images.
Smart Power Management for Your PC
Windows 11 introduces the Energy Saver feature, designed to optimize battery life and reduce energy consumption without compromising performance. Easily accessible via Quick Settings, users can toggle Energy Saver on or off or set it to activate at a specific battery percentage. This feature is beneficial for both battery-powered laptops and desktop PCs. Additionally, the new Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) automatically adjusts brightness based on the displayed content, further enhancing energy savings while maintaining visual quality.
To configure energy saver, go to Settings > System > Power & Battery
These settings not only aim to extend battery life but also promote environmentally conscious computing.
Enhanced Accessibility
In keeping with Microsoft’s commitment to inclusivity, Windows 11 24H2 brings several new accessibility features. These include improved voice access for users who rely on voice commands to navigate the system and interact with applications. A redesigned voice typing feature enhances dictation accuracy, and there are new tools for customizing captions, text size, and color contrast for better readability.
Backup and Restore Enhancements
For users concerned about data protection, the update introduces better backup and restore options through Microsoft accounts. You can now back up more data types, including system settings and apps, to the cloud. This ensures that, in the event of a device reset or upgrade, your data and preferences are preserved.
Native Support for RAR and 7-Zip Files
One highly requested feature is native support for additional file formats like RAR and 7-Zip. This eliminates the need for third-party software to handle these compressed files, streamlining the process for users dealing with multiple archive formats.
System Tray & Taskbar Enhancements
Windows 11 version 24H2 brings several updates to the system tray and taskbar, designed to enhance user experience:
- Scrollable Quick Settings: Users can now easily rearrange and access their quick settings without editing the list.
- Improved Network Connectivity: Animated icons indicate connection status, and a refresh button simplifies Wi-Fi network management.
- Simplified VPN Management: A new split toggle makes it easier to connect to single or multiple VPNs.
- File Explorer Previews: The taskbar now shows preview thumbnails for open File Explorer tabs, streamlining navigation and multitasking.
Bluetooth LE Audio Enhancements
The latest update also enhances Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio support for assistive hearing devices. Users can now directly pair and stream audio from compatible devices, making it easier to connect and manage their audio experience. Features such as audio presets and ambient sound control allow users to adjust settings based on their environment, whether they want to focus on streamed audio or hear surrounding sounds. This improvement boosts accessibility for individuals with hearing challenges.
To explore these features, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
Wi-Fi 7 Support
Windows 11 has introduced Wi-Fi 7 support, marking a significant leap in wireless technology. This enhancement offers multi-gigabit speeds—up to 4x faster than Wi-Fi 6 and nearly 6x faster than Wi-Fi 5. This means users can enjoy smoother streaming, quicker downloads, and improved responsiveness during real-time activities like gaming and video conferencing. With reduced latency and enhanced reliability, Wi-Fi 7 is perfect for users who demand high-speed connectivity.
Join and Share Wi-Fi Networks with QR Codes
The update includes a convenient QR code sharing feature for Wi-Fi networks. Users can now connect to networks simply by scanning a QR code, eliminating the need to manually enter passwords. This functionality allows users to:
- Scan QR codes to join public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in coffee shops.
- Share your Wi-Fi password via QR code, making it easy for friends and family to connect.
- Share your mobile hotspot through a QR code, simplifying the process of providing internet access to other devices.
Effortless Account Management and Notifications in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams now supports seamless switching between personal and work or school accounts within a single application. This update streamlines user workflows by allowing multiple accounts to be accessed simultaneously, each identifiable by distinct icons on the taskbar. Notifications have also been enhanced, providing clearer indications of which account they pertain to, along with more detailed information for quick actions directly from the notification banner.
Expanding Voice Clarity Across Devices
Voice Clarity is now available on a broader range of devices, using AI to enhance audio quality by cancelling echo, suppressing background noise, and minimizing reverberation. It is enabled by default for apps in Communications Signal Processing Mode like Phone Link and WhatsApp, enhancing voice clarity without additional hardware.
Sudo for Windows
The new sudo
command in the Windows command line simplifies administrative tasks by allowing users to run commands with elevated privileges. Users can enable it via Settings and customize its operation mode.
