Windows 11 now allow share content to your Android device from the Windows Share window

A new set of non-security optional updates available for all supported versions of Windows 10/11 that address issues that could affect productivity for people working remotely.

Microsoft released KB5041587 (OS Build 22631.4112)  for Windows 11 Version 22H2/23H2. Also, there is a new cumulative preview KB5041582 (OS Build 19045.4842) available for Windows 10 version 22H2 with few features and improvements. Both of these updates are optional, it won’t download or install automatically unless you manually do it. Windows 11 KB5041587 and Windows 10 KB5041582 offline installers are also available for download on Microsoft Update Catalog. Well if you skip the update, all the new features and improvements are bundled on next month’s patch Tuesday update scheduled for 10 September 2024.

Installing today’s update advances to Windows 11 build 22631.3958, adds sharing to Android devices and fixes multiple File Explorer issues. It also brings some minor improvements to Windows Share, Narrator, and Voice Access.

Talking about Features, The update adds the ability to share content from a linked Android phone right from the Windows Share window. To do this Microsoft noted, you must pair your Android device to your Windows PC. Use the Link to the Windows app on your Android device and the Phone Link on your PC.

You can now share content directly to your Android device from the Windows Share window. Just make sure your devices are paired.

The update makes scan mode in Narrator more responsive, particularly when using Microsoft Edge or reading large documents. It also introduces faster dictation for spelling characters and additional text editing options, making it easier to select, delete, and navigate text.

Additionally, the update addresses several File Explorer issues, such as improving screen reader focus and announcing features when browsing items in dialogues. In the Widgets Board, the update enhances security and APIs, particularly for users in EEA regions.

 

This non-security update provides quality improvements, and also address several key issues:

  • Fixes a memory leak when closing a window with a combo box in focus.
  • Updates Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) profiles for certain mobile operators.
  • Resolves connectivity loss with external devices when certain Bluetooth policies are applied.
  • Prevents the system from becoming unresponsive when accessing symbolic links.
  • Fixes a deadlock in UWF that prevents device restarts during SCCM tasks.
  • Addresses laptop responsiveness issues after resuming from hibernate following multiple lid closures.
  • Corrects the navigation pane so it updates when browsing folders in a shell namespace extension.
  • Reduces excessive SSO prompts required by the European Digital Markets Act (DMA).
  • Fixes the issue where PIN reset fails when selecting “I forgot my PIN” on the credentials screen.
  • Resolves issues with decrypting a BitLocker data drive when moved from a newer to an older Windows version.

Windows 10 KB5041582 what’s new?

The latest Cumulative Update KB5041582 for Windows 10 advances the build number to 19045.4842 and brings several bug fixes and improvements.

This update addresses several key issues, including a memory leak in the Input Method Editor (IME) that occurs when closing a window with a combo box in focus. It updates Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA) profiles for certain mobile operators and resolves an issue where an app stops responding due to a memory leak in a Bluetooth device. Additionally, it fixes a problem where the system might stop responding when accessing symbolic links via the Bind Filter Driver. The update also resolves a deadlock in the Unified Write Filter (UWF) that prevents devices from restarting during SCCM tasks.

Microsoft noted two known issues with this update:

After installing this update, you might be unable to change your user account profile picture. The second one includes, you might face issues with booting Linux if you have enabled the dual-boot setup for Windows and Linux in your device.

Download Windows update

Windows updates are set to download and install automatically but Windows 11 KB5041587 and Windows 10 KB5041582 are optional updates not installed automatically unless you check for updates and manually trigger the install process.

Update Windows 11:

  • Press the Windows key + X and select settings
  • Go to Windows Update and hit the check for updates button,
  • This patch is titled “2023-08 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5041587)”.
  • Click on the download and install button, and wait a few minutes to get it from the Microsoft server, once done reboot your PC.

Update Windows 10:

  • Press Windows key + I to open Settings,
  • Click Update & Security then Windows Update,
  • Here you need to check for updates manually and then click on the ‘Download and install now’ link under optional updates.
  • Once done restart your PC to apply the updates.
